“Let’s get this show on the road...”

Ziggy Stardust is the focus of two different events in Australia on August 1st.

First up, Jeff Duff (that’s him in our picture) and his merry band of music makers kick off their 7-date ZIGGY: The Songs of David Bowie tour on that day, climaxing at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on Saturday August 16. (http://smarturl.it/ZiggyENMORE)

Here’s how excited Mr Duff is to be performing David Bowie’s music once again...

“iOTA, Steve, Brydon and I are excited to be getting back on stage together for the upcoming Bowie concert at the Enmore. We’re including all your favourite Bowie songs AND we get to show off some pretty stylish and flamboyant costumes! We’re all set for an unforgettable night so don’t forget to take you’re protein pills, put your helmet on and get yourself a ticket!”

A Spoken Word Tribute

For the first time, the Festival turns up the volume as the literary cabaret Liner Notes hits town. One of Melbourne’s best-loved spoken word events, this is a poetic tribute to a classic album, song by song. A stellar line-up of writers, poets and musicians explore their personal connection to that glam ham of wham, bam and thank-you-ma’am – David Bowie. Join us as we salute Bowie’s masterpiece of Sturm und Drag, on which he introduced the world to the leper Messiah from outer space, Ziggy Stardust.

Foto: TV COLLECTS MPG INNOVATION AWARD FOR DB

“A new world, new ways ever free…”

Tony Visconti flew into the UK yesterday (Wednesday) to collect The Innovator Award on David Bowie’s behalf at the Music Producers Guild Awards ceremony in London this evening. (http://smarturl.it/MPGawards)

Here’s what he said as he picked up the award...

“It is an honour and a privilege to accept this award on behalf of my friend and collaborator of 47 years, David Bowie. He deserves it because he is the one and the only DAVID BOWIE.”

Tony himself was up for the International Producer of the Year, which in the event went to Rick Rubin. However, he did collect the coveted MPG Joe Meek Award for Innovation in Production in 2011.

TV has received production credits on ten Bowie studio albums from 1969’s Space Oddity album up to The Next Day last year, not to mention the BAAL EP, which, coincidentally, enjoys its 32nd birthday today, February 13th.

The pair first recorded together in September 1967, though the main picture here was taken at Trident in 1970.

David Bowie has been innovating since 1947.

Thanks to Rowena Morgan who took the shot of Tony with the award and to Tony for the picture of the award itself.

Foto: V&A’S DAVID BOWIE EXHIBITION LAUNCHED IN BERLIN

“It’s happening now…”

The V&A’s David Bowie exhibition got off to a great start at Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin last night.

The preview day was followed by a VIP party in the evening, with guests arriving in cars emblazoned with adverts for the exhibition, as witnessed in our collage created with pictures sent from Chris Duffy.

Chris is pictured with a couple of fans, who entered into the spirit along with lots of other attendees approximating their own versions of David Bowie’s looks from across the years.

As promised, the Berlin room is expanded and includes a fair few previously unseen shots of David and friends during his time in the city, along with more art including some of the pieces that influenced Bowie’s own work at the time.

The show is open to the public from today and there are still tickets available here: http://smarturl.it/BOWIEinBERLIN
Foto: DUFFY BOWIE BOOK AND PRINT LAUNCH AT CAMERA WORK

“I put my face in tomorrow...”

Chris Duffy (son of Brian) is pictured here today (Friday) at the CAMERA WORK gallery in Berlin where he will be launching the beautiful new book, Duffy Bowie: Five Sessions at a special presentation on Saturday. (May 17)

In this shot Chris is seen holding a copy of Five Sessions in front of the signed-by-Bowie print, David Bowie Aladdin Sane (Open Eyes) by Brian Duffy.

The print is only available at CAMERA WORK where it will be presented at tomorrow’s event.

The photograph is available as an edition of 25, 102 x 102cm prints, signed and certified by the Duffy archives. Read more here: http://smarturl.it/CAMERAWORK

You can also enjoy a preview of a few spreads from the book here on issuu.com: http://smarturl.it/ISSUU5sessions and on the ACC site here: http://smarturl.it/5SessionsACC
Foto: A LAD AT #1 THIS DAY IN 1973

“Battle cries and champagne...”

Before we start, it’s probably best to warn those of a weak disposition that this item is of a pedantic and trainspottery nature (not to mention being overlong) and for that reason it likely has limited appeal to normal folk.

Aside from the fact that Drive-In Saturday peaked at #3 on this day in 1973 on the official UK singles chart, we’re also celebrating the arrival of David Bowie’s classic 1973 album, Aladdin Sane, at the #1 spot on the official UK album chart 41 years ago today.

The album entered the chart at #1 (helped by the strength of pre-orders) and this fact throws the release date we have celebrated all these years into doubt.

Generally recorded and celebrated (including by us up to last year) as having an April 13th release date, the chart entry date makes that impossible with Aladdin Sane, going straight in at #1.

Back in 1973 the majority of albums were released on a Friday in the UK (it's Monday these days) and the chart position (when charting after one week’s sales) was fifteen days later. This did change in the 80s, but more of that another day.

Official chart entry dates are recorded accurately and armed with this information, along with press adverts, release sheets and weekly news stories from the music press, we can work out when records were actually released.

The first music weekly adverts in the UK appeared in editions dated Saturday April 21st and even though the likes of NME, Melody Maker, Record Mirror and Sounds were available a few days before the Saturday, what would be the point in advertising an album the week after it had been released?

If the release date was ever scheduled for the 13th, there are reasons why it could have been delayed for a week. Friday the 13th isn't a good omen for those of a superstitious nature, but it’s more likely the release was put back because the promotion of Aladdin Sane was one of the most expensive and complex RCA had embarked upon up to that point.

We may do a feature on the production and promotion of Aladdin Sane at some point. But briefly, the coordination and assembly of the various parts of the hugely expensive seven-colour sleeves (printed abroad) along with cassette and 8-track versions of the album and the distribution of 1,000 life size standees of the inner sleeve image and posters to record stores as well as the creation of a TV advert, were all potential trouble spots when trying to hit a national release date.

So we’re going to stick our neck out and say that Aladdin Sane was actually released in the UK on Friday, April 20th, 1973, not the 13th. We have more controversial claims of this nature to bring to your attention in the coming months.

OK, those of you who couldn’t be less interested in such trivia can now wake up!

FOOTNOTE: Being an item about the UK release of Aladdin Sane, what better way to illustrate it than with the French and US adverts!?
Foto: BLACK TIE WHITE NOISE ALBUM IS 21 TODAY

"Putting on the black tie, cranking out the white noise..."

The David Bowie album Black Tie White Noise was released this day in 1993. (April 6th in the US)

The LP not only reunited Bowie with producer Nile Rodgers but also with the #1 album spot in the UK, which had evaded him for the release of a studio album since 1984’s Tonight.

If you’ve not listened for a while, it really is worth revisiting. Aside from a clutch of great singles: Black Tie White Noise (Featuring Al B. Sure!), Jump They Say and Miracle Goodnight, the album also featured the Scott Walkeresque You’ve Been Around, Nite Flights (a Scott Walker original) the charming Don’t Let Me Down & Down and the closing track, the vocal version of The Wedding Song, a romantic tribute to Iman.

The version we’re pointing to on Spotify (http://smarturl.it/SpotifyBTWN) doesn’t include Lucy Can’t Dance, so that’s a bonus. ;-)

“Hot tramp, I love you so...”

As exclusively announced on DavidBowie.com (http://smarturl.it/Rebel40Bnet) and here on the only official David Bowie FB page (http://smarturl.it/Rebel40FB) a couple of months back, the Rebel Rebel 40th Anniversary Picture Disc is out today.

Foto: SOUND AND VISION 45 RELEASED THIS DAY IN 1977

“Don’t you wonder sometimes…”

Originally a #3 UK hit for Bowie in 1977 when it was released as the first single from the classic Low album, Sound And Vision was unusual in that the lead vocal didn’t appear until half way through the song.

It was also strange that it didn’t precede the album release and considering this and the fact that RCA barely promoted the single in the UK, it’s surprising it did so well on the singles chart there.

Produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti, the song also featured a guest vocal from Mary Hopkin, Visconti’s then wife.

If you’ve not heard Sound And Vision recently, go give it a listen for its thirty seventh birthday along with last year’s beautiful Sonjay Prabhakar remix here: https://play.spotify.com/album/0Z0eeyJulKuTCZUiHj18NE

Foto: 6 MUSIC FIRST PLAY OF REBEL REBEL 7” FRIDAY AM

“You’ve got your transmission...”

If you’re up with the lark in the UK of a Friday morning, you may want to tune in to Shaun Keaveny’s BBC 6 Music show (http://smarturl.it/6MusicSK) a little after 7:30am to hear the 7” version of Rebel Rebel on the radio for the first time since the dawn of the digital age.

It’s scheduled for around 7:40, but you know how wayward these breakfast DJs can be. However, if you do miss it you can always utilise the BBC’s nifty listen again feature.

If you’re thinking to yourself, ‘I’ll just listen to it on CD when I get up’, well that’s where you’re in trouble, as this version is yet to make it to CD!

Foto: BARBARA NESSIM ILLUSTRATION FOR V&A MAGAZINE

“Painting our faces…”

Some of you have been asking about the beautiful V&A Magazine cover (Spring 2013 issue) that we posted a smaller version of a few days back in our magazine round up. (BOWIE WORLDWIDE PRESS BLITZ CONTINUES APACE)

The magazine was published officially today and both the cover illustration and montage on the inside of the cover are by Barbara Nessim and were specially commissioned for this edition by the V&A.

Barbara has a feature inside the mag regarding an exhibition of her own work at the V&A, but here's a bit from the Creative Review website about Barbara's cover illustrations:

"The image on the first panel is a pastel drawing on paper. The brief referred to Mick Rock's 'Life on Mars' video, and asked Nessim to create an ethereal, ghostly image – something that suggests great presence and absence while also having the qualities of a transmission from another planet.

The second portrait of Bowie is a collage that depicts a contemporary Bowie (the profile photograph is taken from Jonathan Barnbrook's cover for the Bowie album 'Heathen') looking at himself through a telescope at the point at which he became a star. The quote between the images is from an essay on Bowie written for V&A Magazine by Dylan Jones."

As Creative Review points out (http://smarturl.it/CRdbisMAG), the wording on the inside cover is a quote taken from the essay by Dylan Jones “on the twists and turns that created the most spectacular pop musician in recent history”.

Meanwhile, Creative Review also has an excellent review with pictures of the V&A's David Bowie is book (http://smarturl.it/CRdbisBook), which we can confirm is truly a thing of rare beauty and an absolute visual feast for Bowie fans everywhere.

Jean-David Malat, Director of Opera Gallery London, had this to say about Bowie:

“David Bowie is an incredible ‘icon’; a term to be understood as an idol but also in the ancient Greek notion of eikōn meaning "image" or even religious work of art. It is clear to see that he has influenced many lives, and every artist involved was proud to create a piece in his honour”
